70% pure, USP-grade isopropyl alcohol (also known as IPA or isopropanol) is used for disinfecting tools, service areas, and equipment in critical environments. Less flammable than 99% IPA concentrations, 70% IPA holds 30% moisture content which yields less vapor and removes stubborn residue without becoming overly dry.

Unlike 99% isopropyl alcohol, which is ineffective for desterilization because instant coagulation preserves microbes in a dormant stage, 70% isopropyl alcohol solution kills most surface microorganisms by dissolving the plasma membrane of the cell wall, and is effective against most bacteria, fungi and some viruses (but not spores).
